Students in this course are developing the following skills and competencies:

  • Analyzing literature across genres and time periods with clarity and insight
  • Applying literary terms and genre conventions to interpret texts
  • Writing critically and persuasively about complex topics
  • Exploring how language reflects and shapes race, gender, class, and identity
  • Researching and contextualizing literature within historical and cultural frameworks
  • Understanding aesthetic movements and their influence on authors and texts


These students are well-prepared to support projects that involve storytelling, cultural research, content analysis, identity-based narratives, or communication strategies.


Deliverables will vary depending on the scope of the agreed project. However, these deliverables must be discussed and agreed upon before the match is confirmed.

Requirements

Learners in groups of 3-5 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.


Project activities that learners can complete may include, but are not limited to:

  • Curate a digital exhibit or reading list that highlights key movements in African American literature.
  • Analyze how race, identity, and language are represented in historical or contemporary media.
  • Create content for a museum, nonprofit, or arts organization that connects literature to cultural heritage.
  • Write blog posts, articles, or social media features exploring themes from African American literary texts.
  • Conduct research and write a report on the evolution of storytelling within the African American tradition.
  • Support diversity and inclusion efforts by crafting narratives that elevate underrepresented voices.
